On the question of identity in Iran I naturally tu to the aspect of Iranian culture that I have found most motivating during my study of Farsi, ever since I first encountered it. This aspect is thoroughly intertwined with the notion of Iranian identity and is a matter of passionate interest as well as pride and adoration seemingly for almost all Iranians. This aspect is of course poetry, and scarcely an Iranian national have I encountered that has not expressed some joy at the opportunity to discuss his or her nation's strong poetic tradition with an interested foreigner. Later poets, (such as Mohammad Hossein Shahryar, Nima Youshij, Sohrab Sepehri and Ahmad Shamlu) are much loved by many, but is the work of the "Classical" Iranian poets that seems to engender an almost universal adoration that transcends the various distinctions between Iranians (ethnic, social, ideological... such as will exist in such a vast and diverse nation) and provides an invaluable cultural lynchpin, such Cultural Studies...
